Conversation | Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and Simon Castets on Franz Gertsch
Sun | 4PM
On the occasion of the closing of Franz Gertsch: Polyfocal Allover, photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin will be in conversation with SI Director Simon Castets to discuss the influence of Franz Gertsch on their photographic practice. For Balenciaga’s Fall/Winter 1999 campaign, Inez and Vinoodh took inspiration from Gertsch’s situation portraits, subtly integrating elements of the artist’s bohemian tableaux into a dreamlike reinterpretation. Two years later, they featured Gertsch’s At Luciano’s House (currently hanging in SI’s main gallery) in an exhibition they curated at Matthew Marks Gallery entitled We Set Off in High Spirits. The duo’s longstanding interest in Gertsch has allowed his work to enter, and propagate within, the currents of fashion and brand identity. The talk will explore this enduring, though entirely unintentional, effect.
Please RSVP to email@example.com. Please note: events at Swiss Institute are limited capacity, and entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.
