Judith Bernstein, Trump Genie – Green & Purple Flag | 38 St Marks Editions Portfolio

Description

Judith Bernstein’s invaluable influence on feminist and political art has returned to the spotlight recently, following a number of high profile exhibitions including her current show at the Drawing Center in Lower Manhattan. For decades, the artist has been an underappreciated but powerful force, using biting humor to critique and ridicule the toxic masculinity and militarism of American politicians. Trump Genie – Green & Purple Flag emerges from a series featured in the exhibition Cabinet of Horrors, which includes a new body of work comprised entirely of pieces created following the election of Donald J. Trump to the U.S. Presidency. Making use of Trump’s own language throughout the works in the show, Bernstein distills her reaction to the administration and its policies with her characteristic graphic imagery and expressive line work.

Judith Bernstein (b. 1942 in Newark, New Jersey) lives and works in New York. Throughout her career she has been a participant in activist organizations such as the Guerrilla Girls and the Art Workers’ Coalition, and she was a founding member of the all-women’s cooperative A.I.R. Gallery. Recent solo exhibitions include Judith Bernstein at Kunsthall Stavanger, Stavanger (2016); and JUDITH BERNSTEIN: HARD at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2012). Selected group exhibitions include 20 – An Exhibition in Three Acts at Migros Museum für Gegenwarstkunst, Zürich (2016); Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2016); and Keep Your Timber Limber at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2013). Her work is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Drawing Center, New York, entitled Judith Bernstein: Cabinet of Horrors.
